A CPA firm intranet

The page a public-accounting firm opens through busy season: the deadlines coming up, the notices on the desk, which engagement is next, and the templates the team reaches for every week. Below is a concept design for a mid-sized CPA firm, built entirely from web parts that ship with SharePoint.

  • Audience public accounting firm
  • Build time about one day

What you’re looking at

Nothing on that page is custom-built. Every block is a standard SharePoint web part, set up by an editor with permission to the site.

Click a card to see the exact steps for building it.

01 Hero web part The welcome banner is the standard Hero web part with the One Tile layout, a photo background and an overlaid text panel.
How it is built
  1. On the home page, click Edit. Add a section, One column, just below the site header.
  2. Click + Add a web part and pick Hero. Layout: One tile.
  3. Click the tile, then Edit. Upload the boardroom photo, set the focal point on the conference table.
  4. Set heading to Welcome to The Ledger. Add the supporting paragraph in the call-to-action.
  5. Toggle Show text block on. Choose the brand-blue overlay so the photo and panel meet cleanly.
  6. Republish. The Hero anchors the home page above every other web part.
02 News web part The two news columns (firm news and compliance updates) are two News web parts, each filtered to its own category and using the List layout.
How it is built
  1. Add a section, Two columns. In the left column, click + Add a web part and pick News.
  2. Source: This site. Layout: List. Add a filter on Category equals Firm News.
  3. In the right column, click + Add a web part and pick News again.
  4. Source: This site. Layout: List. Filter on Category equals Compliance.
  5. Set Number of news items to 3 in both. Sort by First published date, descending.
  6. Authors tag each News page with the right category; the two columns sort themselves.
03 Quick Links The Quick Actions tiles, the Departments cards and the Tools & Systems grid are all Quick Links web parts. Different layouts, same web part.
How it is built
  1. Add a section for each Quick Links cluster. + Add a web partQuick Links.
  2. Quick Actions: layout Compact. Add 6 items (New Client, IT Ticket, Time entry, PTO, Engagement tracker, Upload to portal).
  3. Departments: layout Grid. Add 4 items (Tax, Audit, Admin & HR, IT). Pick an icon per item from the gallery.
  4. Tools & Systems: layout Filmstrip. Add 6 items with thumbnails for each tool.
  5. Each Quick Links is the same web part with a different layout. Editors can build all three in 15 minutes.
04 Events web part Upcoming Key Dates is the Events web part pulled from a single firm calendar; staff add new dates from the page.
How it is built
  1. Add an Events web part. Pick the firm calendar list as the source.
  2. Layout: Compact. Show 3 items. Toggle Show event image off (these are dates, not events).
  3. Date range: Upcoming so past dates drop off automatically.
  4. Staff can add new key dates from the front of the page using + Add event; no need to leave the homepage.
  5. For deadline reminders, attach a Power Automate flow on the Calendar list (out of scope for this concept).
05 Quick Chart The four Firm Metrics tiles are Quick Chart web parts (bar, line, horizontal bar, progress) wired to typed values; no Power BI licence needed.
How it is built
  1. Add a section, Four columns.
  2. Column 1: Quick chart. Type Bar. Title Active Tax Returns. Type the 5 weekly values directly.
  3. Column 2: Quick chart. Type Line. Title Entity Returns Pending Review.
  4. Column 3: Quick chart. Type Horizontal bar. Title Open Audit Engagements.
  5. Column 4: Quick chart. Type Progress. Title Average Realization Rate (MTD). Enter the percentage.
  6. No Power BI licence required. Refresh weekly by typing the new values; the four cards stay aligned.
06 People web part Welcome New Team Members uses the People web part to pull each hire from the firm directory; the ribbon and copy live in a Text web part beside it.
How it is built
  1. Add a section, Two columns.
  2. Left column: + Add a web part, People. Layout: Descriptive.
  3. In Add a profile, type the email of each new hire. Photo, title and contact card pull from Microsoft Entra automatically.
  4. Right column: + Add a web part, Text. Add the welcome ribbon (role tag) and one-paragraph bio.
  5. Repeat for each new hire as a separate two-column row. When the hire is no longer new, just remove the People profile.
